The federal government of Nigeria has been called upon to provide adequate security for over twenty four thousand Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Taraba state to enable them return to their homes. The branch secretary Nigerian Red Cross Taraba state chapter Mr. Manja Martin Aggrey made the call while briefing news men on the plight of IDPs in Jalingo.
It could be recalled that thousands of Nigerians have reportedly been internally displaced as a result of the ‘Boko Harram’ insurgence that has ravaged some parts of the North Eastern states of Nigeria. According to Mr. Manja Martin, the population of IDPs in Taraba state kept on increasing on daily basis and was being under reported by relevant bodies hence the need for urgent intervention.
Also what makes their condition worst was the non availability of a functional official IDPs camp in the state and enjoined the federal government to urgently complete the ongoing construction of the IDPs camp located at Jinglary in Yorro Local Government area in Taraba state.
Mr. Martin explain that if the IDPs are kept in one place, some of their basic needs can be easily addressed.
When you keep the IDPs in one place and is properly reported other NGOs will come in to assist like the UNICEF will take over the care of the children, the WHO will come to take care of the pregnant women and the elderly. You will find out that people will come in to assist. But if these IDPs are not kept in one place so that we can give accurate record of their numbers, then this people who are responsible for this kind of population might not know what is happening.
The branch secretary, Nigerian Red Cross Taraba state chapter also stressed the urgent need for Nigeria Government to ensure adequate resettlement plan for Nigerian Refugees returning from the republic of Cameroon who are displace in four Local Government areas in Taraba state
You can see IDPs upon IDPs coming and adding to the one that is already in existence and become their homes are completely destroyed, they cannot even find a way of going back again.
Mr. Manja Martin also urged the Taraba state government to ensure that relevant agencies responsible for emergency situations are manned by officers that have experience in emergency and Disaster management.
