The National Broadcasting Commission NBC of Nigeria has sanctioned three Broadcasting Stations namely the Africa Independent Television AIT, Channels Television and Arise Television for their unguarded reportage of events during the #ENDSARS protests staged across some parts of Nigeria within the last three weeks.
The acting Director General of the Commission Professor Amrstrong Idachaba disclosed this to newsmen yesterday at a news briefing to sanction the three broadcast media organizations for contravening the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.
The Director General noted that the broadcasting stations – Africa Independent Television AIT, Channels Television and Arise News Television violated section 562 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code which states that “All materials sent in by public must be vetted by the broadcaster who has the editorial responsibility”.
Section 563 of the code states that “the broadcaster should be mindful of materials that may embarrass individuals or organizations or cause disaffection, incite to panic or rift in the society; while Section 569 states that the broadcaster shall be held liable for any breach of the code emanating from the use of materials from user generated sources.
The acting Director General of the Commission Prof. Idachaba said it was difficult to believe that prominent broadcast stations caught in the face of these provisions in the code would engage in the use of unverified materials during their broadcasts.
Professor Idachaba said ordinarily their offences should attract the Grade A of the sanction which is total shutdown and withdrawal of their licenses, but the commission for now decided to be lenient by invoking Grade B of the sanction which attract a monetary punishment.
“…the grade B is a monetary fine, so it will be communicated to the stations.”
The National Broadcasting Commission NBC wants broadcast stations to always ensure the veracity of their reportage and urged the broadcasters to always show responsibility for responsive and professional broadcasting especially in this stage of the Nation’s history.
